RECEIVE LIGHT

Friends, I’m back with another update about 2024:

This is your year to embrace truth.

In our most recent podcast episode, I shared that light, in Scripture, is often a metaphor for truth.  Therefore, if I’m encouraging you to receive light, I’m also telling you that it will come from truth.

Where do we find truth?  That’s a great question, and I’ll share the words of Lord Jesus to answer it, “Dedicate them to yourself by means of the truth; your word is truth” (John 17:17, GNT).  Did you see the answer?  He said God’s Word is truth.

With that revelation as our foundation, the following verse isn’t coincidental:

The explanation of your teachings gives light and brings wisdom to the ignorant (Psalm 119:130, GNT).

Here, the psalmist linked the Word of God (i.e., your teachings) to light and wisdom.  That makes the verse less descriptive and more prescriptive.  If you want to receive light, then you need a healthy dose of the Word of God.  Now, let’s unpack the pattern implied in this verse.

  1. Exposure: The psalmist referenced the explanation of the Word.  This means we must be exposed to the Word of God in an environment where it will be explained, whether that’s by the Holy Spirit or someone empowered thereby with the grace to teach.
  1. Embrace: The next step is embracing what has been shared.  That means receiving the Word as a reality for you, and not just people in the Bible or that you highly esteem.
  1. Emittance: The final step is what the psalmist meant by light and wisdom.  When you embrace what you have been exposed to, then truth will emit light to change your perspective.  You see everything through the filter of the Word imparted.

Here are some questions to explore to make this pattern practical.

  1. Exposure: Where is your dedicated place to be exposed to the Word of God?  Who is the teacher?  Is it a person empowered by the Holy Spirit?  Is it the Holy Spirit?  What is the teacher’s focus in the Word of God?
  1. Embrace: How does the truth shared apply to you?  How does it contrast the facts you have encountered?  How can God change your situation, based on the understanding you have of the Word?
  1. Emittance: How has truth transformed you?  How has your perspective shifted?  How does the Word of God serve as a filter through which you view things?

Friends, this is our year to receive light.  Rest assured, when you embrace the truth to which you have been exposed, it will emit light to the path of freedom.  No wonder Lord Jesus said, “If you obey my teaching, you are really my disciples; you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31 – 32, GNT).
