KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE

Friends, I’m excited as I write what I shared in the last episode of our podcast again:

This is our season to bring the calm!

God is looking for partners in His subduing mission.  He wants people who understand how to use their resources to serve Him and bless others.

Beyond knowing God’s priorities in seasons, it’s equally important to know what to do.  In this case, it means knowing what you have.  You can’t deploy resources that you don’t know you have.

I mentioned this instance in Lord Jesus’ life in the podcast episode, but it’s worth noting how meticulous He was in finding out the resources that were available.  Let’s look at the passage again, and you’ll see what I mean:

After this, Jesus went to the farther side of the Sea of Galilee–that is, the Sea of Tiberias. And a great crowd was following Him because they had seen the signs (miracles) which He [continually] performed upon those who were sick. And Jesus walked up the mountainside and sat down there with His disciples. Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was approaching. Jesus looked up then, and seeing that a vast multitude was coming toward Him, He said to Philip, Where are we to buy bread, so that all these people may eat? But He said this to prove (test) him, for He well knew what He was about to do. Philip answered Him, Two hundred pennies’ (forty dollars) worth of bread is not enough that everyone may receive even a little. Another of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him, There is a little boy here, who has [with him] five barley loaves, and two small fish; but what are they among so many people? Jesus said, Make all the people recline (sit down). Now the ground (a pasture) was covered with thick grass at the spot, so the men threw themselves down, about 5,000 in number. Jesus took the loaves, and when He had given thanks, He distributed to the disciples and the disciples to the reclining people; so also [He did] with the fish, as much as they wanted. When they had all had enough, He said to His disciples, Gather up now the fragments (the broken pieces that are left over), so that nothing may be lost and wasted. So accordingly they gathered them up, and they filled twelve [small hand] baskets with fragments left over by those who had eaten from the five barley loaves (John 6:1 – 13, AMPC).

Bear in mind that Lord Jesus already understood the assignment.  He knew what He was about to do, and of all the things He could have said to initiate the assignment, He chose to say, “Where are we to buy bread, so that all these people may eat?”  This was His way of seeing what resources were available to complete the mission.

Friends, we must know what we have that pairs well with God’s purposes and can potentially bless others.  Here are a few resources that may prove handy in this season:

  1. People: Lord Jesus first engaged the people already following Him.  Later, He involved a little boy.  Still later, He engaged His close followers to distribute the multiplied resources.  All these instances show that people aren’t just innocent bystanders or a captive audience awaiting our displays of greatness.  They’re assets who can help us fulfill God’s plan for this season.
  1. Possessions: Lord Jesus used grass, fish, loaves, and baskets to complete the miracle.  These represent physical possessions.  In addition to people, our physical possessions are assets that have greater potential than we may envision.  When used to serve God and bless people, the sky is the limit.

Now that we have the pattern pieces for moving forward in this season of bringing the calm, let’s look at some practical ways to figure out what you have.

  1. People: Who’s already around you? Who seems to understand the purpose God has called you to?  Have you engaged them in helping you move forward?  Who else do you need to bring calm to the chaos you notice?  How would you recruit them to assist with the strategy?
  1. Possessions: What resources can you deploy to bring the calm?  How much of each resource do you have?  Specify how you can use them responsibly to get the best return on your investment.

Friends, let’s bring the calm by engaging people and investing our possessions to serve God and bless others.  Let’s follow the example both God, our Father, and Lord Jesus, our Savior, used to make this world a better place.
