Hey friends, we’re almost home! This blog post is about surrendering. We’ve already talked about surrendering your thoughts and heart. If you missed those conversations, you’re in for a great ride when you read them.
The final step is to complete the assignment. In other words, after surrendering your thoughts and heart, you have to surrender your whole life.
Why? If you don’t surrender the rest of your life, you’re leaving the door open to how you used to live. Surrendering your life is the same as saying, “I never want to go back to my old thoughts and desires.”
What does it look like? Our friend Jonah helps us out again. Check out what he did below:
Once again the Lord spoke to Jonah. He said, “Go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to the people the message I have given you.” So Jonah obeyed the Lord and went to Nineveh, a city so large that it took three days to walk through it (Jonah 3:1-3, GNT).
Earlier, Jonah ran away from God. But this time, he went in the same direction. This is what surrendering your life means. From now on, you move in the same direction as God.
This involves two things:
- Alignment. Think of the tires on a car. If one wheel isn’t aligned, the car won’t go straight. It’ll be hard to keep going in a consistent direction. That’s why alignment is important. This step makes sure that you and God are moving in the same direction.
- Assignment. Remember homework? Hopefully, that didn’t bring back bad memories. If you didn’t finish your homework, you didn’t get a good grade. That’s the mindset you need to have. Your assignment isn’t complete until you die, so be prepared for the long haul.
Jonah did both. He aligned and moved in the same direction as God. He also accepted and fulfilled his assignment. And guess what? An entire city was changed by the power of God!
Here’s a quick guide on how to surrender:
1. Recognize the signs and symptoms that surrendering might be needed.
2. Change your mindset about what you were doing.
3. Reconnect with God.
4. Complete the assignment.
If you follow these steps, you’ll have an incredible relationship with God and achieve great results. That’s God’s wish for you – intimacy and impact. With your help, God can make our world a better place in your lifetime!
