This blog post is like a conversation that’s already happening. It started here.
Surrendering is a big process, and this post is about the next step: repentance. If you’re not familiar with that word, I’ll explain it simply. It means to change your mind. It means thinking differently about something in a way that you haven’t before.
Let’s use an example to make it clear. Think of your favorite food. Before repentance, you’d love to eat that food. But if you repent, that same food would make you gag.
If that makes sense, let’s talk about repentance in the context of surrendering. If you’ve been living only according to your own desires, then repenting means you can’t keep doing that. Living only according to your own desires has to become disgusting before you’ll even consider living according to God’s plan.
Now, let’s look back at Jonah, whom we talked about in the last blog post. He shows us what it looks like when you change your mind about living only according to your own desires.
“I am a Hebrew,” Jonah answered. “I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made land and sea.” Jonah went on to tell them that he was running away from the Lord. The sailors were terrified , and said to him, “That was an awful thing to do!” The storm was getting worse all the time, so the sailors asked him, “What should we do to you to stop the storm?” Jonah answered, “Throw me into the sea, and it will calm down. I know it is my fault that you are caught in this violent storm” (Jonah 1:9-12, GNT).
The guy who was fast asleep in the storm changed his mind about “doing his own thing.” He admitted fault and encouraged the sailors to throw him overboard to calm the storm he had ignored. In other words, Jonah wanted out of the consequences of selfishness right away. What a big change of mind!
Before I wrap up this blog post, I’ll share some things Jonah did that showed repentance:
- Change your thoughts. First, you have to change your thoughts. Remember Jonah? He didn’t think the storm was his fault until he realized he was rebelling against God. Just like Jonah, you need to change your mind about your actions and see how they’re causing problems.
- Change your travel. Thinking is important, but it’s not enough. You need to take action and move in the right direction. This means turning away from your old ways and moving forward. Like Jonah, you need to make changes in your life that align with your beliefs.
So, that’s repentance in a nutshell. It’s about changing your thoughts and taking action to move closer to God. Remember, God has a plan for you, and He’ll guide you to your spot in 2025!
